Promethian outline. NOT FINAL, NEEDS WORK

Post by Vincent Airin »

Just a quick drawn up entry on the slimy boys and girls brewed in the labs of biology.

Making this clear, I do NOT intend to have this as the full and undisputed entry on the critters, but would rather have it refined from here in order to keep it fitting with our current works.

⦁ Part one Appearance and Overview
Promethians are often observed, but crew, as fluid beings possessing a humanoid form in their composition. More often than not, a Promethian is quite easily distinguished from the crowds and crews of the workplaces they dwell within. This is due to the typically translucent membrane of their 'bodies'. Height and coloration can vary wildly between one subject to another, from deep hues to vibrant neon. Locomotion also remains as variable with the method being preferential to the subject at the time. Of all the variables, the one thing that remains constant is that conventional clothing is out and that customized garments are only possible.

⦁ Part two Composition and Creation
As one might be able to tell, Promethians are not a naturally occurring species of the cosmos (At the time of documentation.) Rather; Promethians are a created species through the experimentation of macro-cellular ameboid creatures (colloquially named slimes) and their respective cores. In particular this is something that happens due to a reaction between cores denoted as 'cerulean' in coloration are introduced to the agent dubbed 'phoron' via injection. Injection is required due to the semi hardening of these cores, a process for which their namesake is derived. Once a core is injected with the catalytic agent of phoron, the core rapidly swells and expands into a humanoid shape between one and a half to two meters in height. The method for which this occurs is ill understood and is subject to debate, science teams argue a rapid acquisition of airborne vapors and particulates, while others believe it is the atomic decay of phoron due to the composition of cerulean cores. Despite the methodology, a new Promethian is effectively borne in seconds within the lab setting.
⦁ Part three Society and Intelligence.
Like many a created species, there is not a traditional societal structuring for a Promethian. As such many tend to develop or adopt mannerism by proximity or observation. This leads to a more blank slate template for behavior and often leads to a far more inquisitive nature for the beings. Their intelligence also remains to be seen as anything consistent. Often speech is entirely lost before the first few hours or days of existence, but does show a remarkable level of mimicry and adaptation seen in 'lesser' slime creatures. However, much like their creation process, this too is left to debate between being a yet unseen neurological process (as they do not have a traditional brain) or if this is simply an exaggerated inherited trait of their progenitors.

Conceptually I'd say it works, it just needs more fleshing out. It needs proofreading and editing but that's a fairly minor complaint. Use the template if you have interest in finishing writing for Prometheans, attached here: https://citadel-station.net/wikiRP/inde ... _Templates

For critique of what's written, and this will be (mostly) of concepts rather than grammar, typos, or other minor things:

Overall: Generally make things a bit clearer so it doesn't take hard scrutiny to tell what you mean, there's a handful of instances like this throughout the writing. It's also very bare, and could use more expansion - again, refer to template.

Part One:
"Locomotion also remains as variable with the method being preferential to the subject at the time." It's unclear what you mean here. If I'm understanding you correctly you mean something along the lines of slimes either rolling along as a mass or forming legs and feet and walking. If I am correct, you should make that a bit clearer.

"Of all the variables, the one thing that remains constant is that conventional clothing is out and that customized garments are only possible." Unless we have a code-side restriction on Prometheans being able to wear only Cohesion Suits, this should be removed, and possibly replaced with something like, "Prometheans, initially, need to wear Cohesion Suits to keep their form and prevent them from melting into a standard slime. Depending on their age, ability to control themselves, and/or other factors, a Promethean skilled enough at keeping their figure together can allow them to wear normal clothing, and with practice, prevent it from getting drenched in slime." This would allow for more player choice.

Part Two:
"As one might be able to tell, Promethians are not a naturally occurring species of the cosmos (At the time of documentation.)" I don't mind this personally, just ask Promethean players if you know any if this would conflict with their canon or whatnot. If the majority are choosing not to play as uplifted slimes but a totally alien species with it's own culture, then this should be removed.

Part Three:
"Often speech is entirely lost before the first few hours or days of existence," This line needs to be cleaned up a good bit. Clarify that the knowledge of their slime language is lost, rather than saying the ability to speak is lost, if that is what you mean. If you mean they lose the ability to speak, try to get the tense correct and say that a slime develops the ability to speak Common/normal languages after a few hours or days, rather than saying "before", because it could come across as mob slimes losing the ability to speak before they are turned into Prometheans, as if only specific slimes could be turned into Prometheans and that loss of speech was the sign of candidacy.

"(as they do not have a traditional brain)" Not a criticism, but make sure that goes into the "Biology" section when/if you switch to the lore template.

I'm in agreement with Drof here, though I don't have anything new to add critique-wise. I'm glad you're tackling Prometheans, though, because they could use the love.

First revision on some requested clarification and cleaning before grammatical work.

This is usually seen in the form of leg formation or sliding goo masses; typically your more common method would be a bipedal stance in order to fit in with crews and crowds more. Prometheans, initially, need to wear Cohesion Suits to keep their form and prevent them from melting into a standard slime. Depending on their age, ability to control themselves, and/or other factors, a Promethean skilled enough at keeping their figure together can allow them to wear normal clothing, and with practice, prevent it from getting drenched in slime.

Often, proper speech is not attained for the first few hours or days of existence, but does show a remarkable level of mimicry and adaptation; as is seen in the 'lesser' slime creatures from which they originate. However, much like their creation process, this too is left to debate between being a yet unseen neurological process or if this is simply an exaggerated yet inherited trait of their progenitors.

Looks good, thanks for working those areas out some more. Just needs more expansion and translation into the lore template (Racial Submission Template, not Minor Race Submission Template) and I'll look forward to the next one.

Promethians in a nutshell.

Promethians are a created species, often dwelling within stations and installations that have access to two resources; cerulean slime cores and pure phoron compounds. These beings typically serve as crew or staff with vary degrees of rank dependent in much the same fashion as any organics at a facility. Little is unknown other than their true composition, as cases of 'wild' or naturally born Promethians is an unheard of concept. With such scrutiny in mind, it is quite easy to find one out of a crowd, typically seen as a liquid or semi liquid form of relatively clear fluid.

Biology in detail.

What is fascinating about Promethians does not stem from culture or history (see further entry), but rather their physical compositions and work processes. The creation of a Promethian begins with the injection of phoron into a cerulean slime's core; this process triggers an ill understood reaction in the core, rapidly expanding and shaping into a roughly two meter tall being comprised of fluid (who's source is currently up to debate by teams), the core and organ like facsimiles. Such 'mock' organs are a point of debate among researchers as to if they actually function like their counterparts or are for show: these include, but are not limited to; ocular organs, tongues, brains, ears stomachs and genitalia. Why these creatures seem to replicate these parts is unknown, but it is often speculated that this is to facilitate a sense of familiarity with more solid based organics. There is however, one actual organ that remains standard in Promethians; their cores. A Promethian's core behaves in a similar fashion as a generic slime's core behaves. Ill understood as they are, it has been observed that these are the biological control centers of the being, from which the control over its form is exuded. Observation and speculation has led many researches to believe that this core works by exuding necessary organelle components, which interact and assimilate fluid mediums in order to create the complete Promethian being. Given that the fluid medium itself seems to be highly variable, one can assume that a Promethian can in fact be composed of all but the most extreme of liquids. Examples of such extremes would include hyper or hypo viscous liquids like thin lubricants, waters or thick tars and pastes; extreme temperature liquids like liquid nitrogen or superheated fluids; or volatile compounds that would either combust or vaporize in atmosphere. One important discovery from field work and a really friendly Promethian chef, is the interaction between their core substance and organic consumption. The 'jelly' that is taken from a Promethian is exceptionally toxic to all but others of their kind (likely behaving like a transfusion between them.) From their fluid type comes a general level of cohesion, actively controlled and regulated by the Promethian. Such level is typically an actively controlled aspect of their form, often requiring training or the use of a specialized cohesion regulating suit when a young Promethian is not yet capable of controlling their forms. These suits are used as a training device for one to learn the proper motions of control and to keep from spilling over into a puddle when they are not capable. As a closing note, as it does bear mentioning, procreation between Promethians and any other species has yet to be observed through research means or by any teams to date. While teams are apprehensive to officially deny that it is possible, the general consensus is that is is not; because of such, the community has actively branded such creatures as a created species and not a naturally occurring species or a mutant offset of the traditional research slime.

Culture and History.

This archivist must apologize before hand, but this particular entry will be rather barebones!

The culture, the history, both of these aspects of Promethians are regrettable rather empty. Being a created species these creatures and the relative recent discovery of phoron; there is no substantial sample size to give an account of cultural cohesion and a history beyond station documented studies, recordings and incident logs. What would be considered a cultural aspect might be the kinship between their progenitor species of cerulean slimes and each other, but this is often regarded as instinctual behavior over a learned one. As such one can effectively consider Promethians generally curious, exotic and potentially dangerous; but culturally dependent on their surrounding groups and parties in which they adopt behaviors, mannerisms and languages from those they are regularly in contact with (an interesting parallel with their fluid adoption biology.) Maturity seems largely nonexistent with these beings beyond their ability to actively maintain a cohesive and or bipedal form.

Apologies for the delayed response. I think this looks good; about what I would've thought for the species, to be honest. Grammar is still a bit 'eh' in this, but, that can be fixed in editing before it's posted.
