Brass Order RP submission

Post by SalemiPizza »

Preface

The Brass Order, despite being a front for the Clockwork Cult, is NOT an antagonistic group. Because of this, you are not allowed to use them as a reason to self antag. As another measure, any members of the Brass Order that appear on station are of the lowest level, and do not know of Ratvar’s existence. You do not know his name, nor do you know of anything regarding him or the true goals of the Clockwork Cult. Casually referencing the existence of Ratvar isn’t allowed and violates rule 3.

Name:

The Brass Order

Modern Day:

On the 12th of July, 2564, an event known as the Galactic Awakening took place, with paracausal energy spiking for the first time in two centuries. While Nanotrasen were the first amongst the corporations and races to take major notice and react to this event, they were not the only ones to mobilize. Behind the scenes, the Clockwork engines started to rumble again, the followers of Ratvar preparing for the return of their god’s ancient enemy, Nar’Sie. However, over the decades past, the numbers of the cult dwindled.

This was due to several factors, though notably because of an extreme loss of life from the invasion of the Marksman. During the six month occupation of the Marksman by the Blood Cult, the Clockwork Cult assembled what little manpower they had left. Once the order was given by Nanotrasen for the forces on the Triumph to assist in flushing out the Blood Cult, the Clockwork Cult made their move. In the ensuing chaos, nobody noticed an unmarked ship dock on the Marksman, the forces inside joining in the eradication of the occupying cult. Most of the Clockwork Cultists that joined in this attack died, however, leaving bodies that couldn’t be identified as Nanotrasen employees. They were assumed to have been Blood Cultists that were trying to escape.

To combat their ever decreasing numbers, the Clockwork Cult established a society of mechanically minded individuals, bringing the best among them into the Cult. This society, known as the Brass Order, has slowly been establishing themself as a rational group based around self-sufficiency and the use of simpler, less dangerous technology to minimize harm to the environment and others. This belief puts the Brass Order in direct opposition to the Third Iterate, who are regarded by the Brass Order as technophiliacs and fanatics that mess with technology they do not understand.

Ethos:
While ultimately a recruitment front for the Clockwork Cult, the Brass Order is a legitimate religious organization with actual, albeit clueless, members. These members, while they do not know of Ratvar, are usually deistic in their beliefs. Most share the belief that the universe was created by some greater being, and that every creature in the universe has their individual role to play. This is not to be mistaken for a belief in predestined behavior, however, as the Brass Order heavily emphasizes adaptability in their service to the universe, which they refer to as the Great Machine.

The Brass Order can be organized into three “levels”, with each level being named after a part in the planetary gearbox system. In order to differentiate between the levels at a glance, a tattoo is given to the members as they rise up the ranks. The internals are given a half cog tattoo, usually placed around the wrist or belly button. Once a member rises to the Planetary rank, the second half of the cog is added. On the rare occasions that a member proves themselves worthy enough to join the Solar gears, a sun is tattooed around the cog. The Order chose to adopt this naming and tattoo convention not only for its mechanical nature, but for the cosmological symbology of the gearbox itself.

The lowest level, known as the Internal Gears, is the largest group in the Brass Order. Primarily made of younger members and those who simply seek a community to be a part of, the knowledge of the Internals is limited. Their education mostly consists of practical knowledge, such as sewing clothes, growing crops and cooking, as well as a more common “college-level” education. Most have never even heard of the Clockwork Cult, and the few that do merely know it as a passing rumor, fanatics from an age long gone. Any member from the Brass Order seen on a station or ship belongs to this level.

If a member has been a part of the Order for long enough, and proven themself to be dedicated enough, they are allowed to join the Planetary Gears. With the initiation to the Planetary Gears comes access to the brass forges, from which the Brass Order got their name. The reliance on brass as a primary material comes primarily from a distrust of phoron, which the Order tends to regard as volatile at best.

At the highest level of the Brass Order, the Solar Gears, the divine goal of rebuilding Ratvar is revealed. While most members at this level choose to join and dedicate their services to the more underhanded activities of the Clockwork Cult, a minor number stay in the Brass Order to lead future generations in hopes of cultivating future cultists.

To the uninitiated, however, knowledge is limited to what little a representative of the Brass Order may tell them, as well as the three governing tenants of the group.

1: Do not harm, unless in retribution. To harm needlessly is to risk damage to a cog in the Great Machine.

2: Do not waste. To waste is to lose efficiency.

3: Do not stagnate. To stagnate is to resist the ever changing nature of the Great Machine.

With the Initiation to the Solar Gears, however, a fourth tenant is taught.

4. Do not speak. To tell the uninitiated of our secrets is blasphemy of the highest decree.

Notable Stances Towards Corporations:

The pacifistic nature of the Brass Order has allowed them some leeway in making themselves a valid religion and accepted private society. Nanotrasen and any other phoron using company does have rough edges with the group due to their natural distrust of the element. Regardless, this doesn’t stop most companies from hiring a person from the Brass Order, since they are well regarded for being adept with technology.

Influence:

The influence of the Brass Order is greatly limited, not by any external forces, but by the Order itself. While the Clockwork Cult is in great need of members, not just anyone will do. The group curates who can and cannot join carefully, usually turning down those that are overly curious or inquisitive for fear of the true nature of the Order being discovered.

If the clockwork cult is a psychotic, aggressive force looking to recruit new members into their fold - how would it benefit them to foster a group of pacifists to that end? Do they pick up the members that become too 'extreme' for the Brass Order? Indoctrinate or recruit normal members somehow? It seems counterintuitive for an aggro cult to specifically focus on gathering pacifists.

The pacifistic tendencies are mostly just used to keep the lower levels in check. As the members go up the levels, the intent is for them to be slowly radicalized, starting with an "it's only in self defense", till you eventually get to the Solars, where the sentiment could be moreso interpreted as "we're acting in defense of Ratvar and the universe itself, and most of these guys just cant be trusted to keep the universe on the right path." I didn't really express that well enough, though.

hey, I'm gonna ask that this be moved to denied/deleted. I'm gonna make another pass and address some of the issues with a heavier, more intense rewrite than just adding a few lines, etc.
