Rights For Roanoke
Founded around 2545, not long after Xenochimera were classified as their own species by the Orion Confederation, Rights For Roanoke is an activist group pushing for greater acceptance of and better treatment towards Roanoke Organic Apparatus (ROA) across the Galaxy. Although primarily based in the Orion Confederation, the RFR has established branches all across known space, save for Hegemony space where they are, largely, without influence. The RFR’s primary doctrine revolves around nonviolent demonstrations, typically in public locations in OriCon space, alongside smaller colonies where Xenochimera are, naturally, less accepted.
The RFR is an all-volunteer “force” with varying levels of participation within the organization. The majority of the members are activists who engage the main forms of bringing the RFR’s message to the masses: nonviolent, peaceful protest. The RFR largely advocates for nondisruptive protests, typically targeting locations linked to the mistreatment of Xenochimera. Typical targets include law enforcement stations, corporate entities, and the embassies of various factions, most notably Unathi, Apiaden, Tyrmalin, and even the offices of certain human politicians. These are primarily seen as ways to spread knowledge about the RFR’s aims and goals by the leadership of the organization, rather than a way to make meaningful change.
Behind the scenes are the RFR’s second way of helping xenochimera: public outreach. The RFR maintains a presence on the ExoNet dedicated to educating about Xenochimera, targeting common myths and exaggerations related to the species, alongside ways to support the RFR and the Lucchini Foundation, suchas through donations and activism, the former of which largely keeps the RFR afloat. Another part of the RFR’s public outreach are so-called “Buddy Talks.” These take place in college campuses, at local government meetings, and other places of assembly across spaces where RFR branches have been established. These consist of the titular “Buddies,” a medical expert meant to address concerns, questions, and comments from the audience to a professional degree, and a Xenochimera meant to tell their experiences to the audience. The intent of these talks is twofold: the medical professional calms audience fears and resolves misconceptions about Xenochimera, while the Xenochimera themselves shows the audience that, much like themselves, they are a person, too.
The third and final way the RFR contributes to their mission statement is through their legal team. Whenever a Xenochimera is detained for just about anything, the RFR tends to get in touch with them to send a (fee-less) legal representative their way to ensure they were rightfully detained and not unjustifiably mistreated. This occurs through either a hotline that most imprisoned persons can call (although it’s meant to be used by Xenochimera) or by RFR members searching the ExoNet for reports of arrested Xenochimera. However, both methods mean that the RFR can’t respond to every arrested Xenochimera, just the ones who reach out to them or are located by reputable news sources.
Naturally, there are many who see this as the RFR tampering with cases where Xenochimera do legitimately pose a threat to those around them, but the RFR claims that they only wish to reduce the instances where Xenochimera are wrongly prosecuted or that mistreatment is properly addressed. This is arguably where much of the money raised by donations goes to, especially as some legal experts can see their reputations tarnished by becoming involved with Xenochimera-related cases, becoming somewhat reliant on pseudo-employment within the RFR.
The RFR’s public relations are fairly complicated, there being many who see them as nothing more than whackjobs making a mountain out of a molehill, while others express gratitude towards the lengths and methods the RFR take in fighting for the rights and humane treatment of Xenochimera. Regardless, the RFR is supported by certain political figures who share their ideological views, with the RFR often leveraging these relations in securing official government action beyond what activism can produce. At the same time, these figures, along with others in local governments and other positions of power, occasionally donate to the RFR as a PR show of their own. Overall, the RFR has seen moderate success in spreading their message and knowledge about Xenochimera across the places they have influence, but thus far lack any substantial changes to anything beyond, perhaps, local governments, and even then only minor alterations in many cases. Nevertheless, the RFR hasn’t lost any of its momentum, and seems to be relatively stable as far as activist organizations go. Time will only tell if their goals are fully realized.
The Lucchini Foundation
Although named after the (in)famous Roanoke Organic Appartus (ROA) or Xenochimera Felicia Lucchini, commonly attributed to having been what kicked off the identification of Xenochimera across the galaxy, the Foundation has no explicit relation to the former Chancellor nor her family. Rather, the name is indicative of the Foundation’s purpose: to assist Xenochimera who were uprooted by the discovery of their condition. The Foundation’s history can be tied to the Phoron Wars, where anti-Xenochimera sentiments were at their highest point since their original discovery. The Lucchini Foundation was formed in the mid-2550s as a reaction to progroms specifically targeting ROAs, rumored to be funded by prominent politicians who were either ROAs themselves or had sympathies towards them. The Foundation was and still is a nonprofit, non-government organization that operates throughout known space, though notably lacks many offices in Hegemony space, though compared to a group like Rights For Roanoke (RFR), the Foundation is far more spread out across known space rather than solely being focused around OriCon space.
As mentioned previously, the Foundation’s mission statement is to provide assistance to Xenochimera by relocating them from dangerous environments to parts of space that are either more accepting towards Xenochimera, or under new identities entirely. The Foundation commonly uses offices across various territories in order to provide these services, but given that it cannot be everywhere at once it also keeps a presence on the ExoNet where ROAs can easily get in touch with a representative in order to begin their relocation. ROAs are often referred to the Foundation through the RFR as well, and the two groups have rather close relations as many of the Foundation’s backers are also those who publicly support the RFR. While the two groups are distinct from each other, plenty of cooperation has been fostered throughout the years, to the point where the upper echelons of both are in near-constant communication.
The process of relocation is a complicated affair for the Foundation and Xenochimera alike. Typically, after contact is made with the Foundation, the Xenochimera in question is moved to a temporary holding facility by the Foundation. These are inhabited by dozens, if not more, Xenochimera at a time. The facilities are designed after communes, with each Xenochimera having their own housing, alongside the facilities being self-sufficient to some degree. Xenochimera are heavily discouraged from staying here permanently, however, as the Foundation works with them to determine ideal areas for the Xenochimera to move to. This is only exacerbated as multiple Xenochimera in any one space inevitably results in territorial disputes that often turn violent unless the offending parties are relocated quickly.
Where a Xenochimera goes largely depends on what’s available alongside the Xenochimera’s preferences. Once a location is determined, the Foundation works with local officials to move the Xenochimera in, either publicly as an ROA or privately as whatever species they outwardly identify as. Despite rumors and criticisms tht the Foundation moves Xenochimera in illegally and with no prior warning, officials are largely kept informed throughout the process as the Foundation picks areas known to accept ROAs among their population. In more recent years, the Foundation has worked with corporations such as Nanotrasen in hiring ROAs in various positions, with the new worker, accordingly, receiving housing aboard dedicated colonies such as the Marksman and Demeter. These corporate dealings have largely been what keeps the Foundation afloat, especially as some corporations publicly donate to the Foundation as a way of boosting their own public reputation.
The Foundation’s service does have a caveat in that they only relocate non-violent Xenochimera. This can create significant delays if a Xenochimera is detained (rightfully or otherwise) forcing the Foundation to wait to see if they are ruled innocent or otherwise charged with a criminal offense, regardless of whether or not it had to do with their species. The Foundation has encountered several controversies where Xenochimera were improperly vetted, leading to possibly dangerous ROAs being integrated into communities, not to mention non-violent ROAs who were later charged with different offenses. While these cases are an extreme minority, the resulting media attention has only stoked fears and prejudices against ROAs, especially among hardliner groups. Foundation offices and holding centers have often seen attacks by anti-Xenochimera militias, leading to another problem for the organization: its lack of manpower.
While the Foundation has a dedicated workforce, it is relatively small in the grand scheme of things. Artificial intelligence is used where it’s possible to expedite certain processes or to delegate tasks to compensate for the lack of other workers. The Foundation largely relies on hired transport pilots to move Xenochimera around, alongside hiring private security firms for said transports and holding centers. This, naturally, means the Foundation is as strained on funding as it is on manpower, hence the cooperation with the RFR. The necessity of this is made more apparent due to the sheer scope the Foundation has to cover, even with the lack of offices in the Hegemony, it still needs to be able to respond to any requests for relocation coming from Moghes territory. Naturally, this has led to several instances where Xenochimera requesting aid from within the Hegemony have been killed prior to the Foundation being able to fully transport them out, either due to delays on the Foundation’s end or intentional obfuscation from Hegemony officials.
Terrorism has become a prominent issue for the Foundation in recent years with the prominence of organizations such as the “Skin Saviours” whom the Foundation is unable to directly confront, only circumvent in their relocation of afflicted ROAs. Several Foundation communes have been attacked by armed militias associated with this group, leading to the deaths of many private security personnel both during the initial fighting, and afterward when Xenochimera, inevitably, go feral. This has resulted in several communes outright being forced away from certain territories, and others beginning to ressemble military camps or prisons with heavy defenses and a reliance on increasingly militarized PMCs as the Foundation goes through security groups who become fed up with having to guard Xenochimera. Another, smaller scale but no less serious issue, are security breaches where individuals working with the Foundation leak the information about Xenochimera who have either been relocated or are awaiting relocation. This often leads to the affected ROAs being relocated yet again or outright being killed by unknown assailants, with many questioning the security of the Foundation’s internal systems from incidents like these.
Despite its struggles, the Lucchini Foundation has shown no signs of ceasing its activity throughout the Galaxy, and seems poised to continue its mission for as long as possible.
Skin Saviours
The ‘Skin Saviours’ movement, originating mostly in Sol and spread out through the Orion Confederation dates back to the midst of the Phoron Wars, originating from a time when so called ‘Changelings’ terrorized NanoTrasen Stations and caused widespread destruction. Even decades after the smoke had cleared and Xenochimera were recognized as a sapient species, the Skin Saviours still received support from the citizens of Sol and many frontier colonies.
The Skin Saviours are by no means an organized force, comprised of mainly lowerclass citizens, mostly of the working class as well as sympathetic politicians and some lengths of law-enforcement/military who share the same views of Xenochimera. That being: Complete extermination and removal from Sol. The Saviours do not contain any major leadership, rather working on a Cell based system, utilizing smuggling, theft and sympathy from some Government workers to fulfill their goals. It is suspected, however not confirmed that they have an array of hideouts in Sol, and operate from them accordingly.
The Saviours methods are blunt, comitting murder, terrorism and whatever else they need to cull the prescense of ROA’s (Roanoke Organic Apperatus), as well as holding rallies and sometimes even riots. A few popular motto’s they use is, ‘DRIVE THE SKINWALKERS OUT!’, “JUSTICE FOR THE MURDERED!” and “RECLAIM OUR FACES!” Despite their radical ideales, many have flocked to their movement due to the lack of other alternatives to express their hate for ROA’s. However, this has resulted in the Orion Confederation to flag The Saviours members as terrorists, resulting in the movement being forced to go underground after crackdowns.
The Saviours of course, despise the efforts of the Rights for Roanoke and Lucchini Foundation, and are currently in active conflict with them. Considering their groups de-centralized and unfocused nature, the Sin Saviours often employ unconventional warfare tactics. These include firebombings against Lucchini Foundation Communes, as well as attempted assassinations on RFR ‘Buddy Talks.’ One such incident occured in 2567, in which a Skin Saviours member walked into one of aformentioned Buddy Talks, firing a single round into the Xenochimera on stage and quickly ran off, leading to the Xenochimera going feral. This proved to significantly worsen public images of the RFR, multiple criticizing them of not being able to protect the Chimeras they care so much about. The Lucchini Foundation have also experienced similar attacks in the forms of firebombing, assassinations on protected Xenochimera and so forth.
The Saviours, in recent years, have began to host rallies to increase their numbers. Preaching words, true or false to tarnish the reputation of Xenochimeric Entities and draw more people to their cause. This has led to a significant bolster in members, though it is nigh impossible to give a true count of their manpower.
Chimera’s Fangs
“I advocate for violence because that is all you’ve shown us. When you can speak to our people in the language of diplomacy, we will do the same. Until then, your violence begets our violence. And we are far more capable of killing you than you are at killing us.” - Chimera’s Fangs Leader “Typhon.”
An ultra-radical group of so-called social revolutionaries, the Chimera’s Fangs are a notably recent phenomena. Historically, their formation seems to have occurred no later than the early 2560s, well after similar groups like the Rights For Roanoke activist group and the Lucchini Foundation. The Chimera’s Fangs, if anything, have been a reaction to the increasing rise in radical, anti-Roanoke Organic Apparatus (ROA) organizations such as the so-called “Skin Saviours” based out of the Sol System and reports of violence against Xenochimera from abroad such as in the Hegemony and within the ranks of other alien species. Currently, the actual history of the organization is unknown to anyone but its top-ranking members and its two leaders: “Typhon” and “Echidna.” It is unknown if one, both, or neither are Xenochimera, though most public speeches are attributed to “Typhon” where his language remains heavily ambiguous, often correlating himself to Xenochimera without specifying whether or not he is an ROA himself. Even less is known about Echidna beyond her existence as purported through internal documentation recovered on what few successful raids have been conducted on the organization, although at this time it seems “she” (assuming their alias is significant) is largely concerned with the internal logistics of the group.
Regardless of the group’s exact origins, they came to prominence in 2563 when several raids were conducted on incarceration facilities across OriCon, Combine, and Hegemony space, ostensibly targeting Xenochimera who had been imprisoned for various reasons. To this day, it is rumored that members of the RFR assisted the Chimera’s Fangs in locating these facilities through their own legal network, though this link has never been definitively proven. Regardless, the size of the Chimera’s Fangs was bolstered overnight by the prisoners kept within these facilities, especially political dissidents within the Hegemony itself. Only an extremely small percentage of the prisoners liberated by the Chimera’s Fangs were Xenochimera, though most of those remained within the group likely out of fear that they would face retribution for the group’s actions in liberating them or out of sympathy with their cause. This early “recruiment” has largely defined the composition of the organization: split between genuine hardline believers of the cause and those simply caught up in their operations, remaining out of a spite towards whatever government imprisoned them, or because of their own love for violence.
It is this violence that has come to define the “doctrine” of the Chimera’s Fangs, publicly preaching that violence against Xenochimera shall be returned tenfold towards those who commit it. The size of the Chimera’s Fangs allows them to boast a small army, not one that can challenge entire nations, but one that is well-equipped for the kind of violent terrorist attacks and guerilla warfare that they engage in all across known space. The Chimera’s Fangs are best split into two “branches,” one that exists within OriCon space and the other in “alien” space, namely near the Vikara Combine and Hegemony. Their OriCon branch is notably the smaller of the two, dubbed the “Orthus Special Forces.” True to their name, they act guard dogs for Xenochimera in OriCon space, primarily through hunting down perpetrators of violence against them. This has led to an ongoing conflict with the Skin Saviours as anyone who shows even a remote amount of public support for them or is known to work with the Skin Saviours becomes a target for Orthrus. Ironically, Orthus’s methods are not dissimilar to Skin Saviour’s at all. Several political offices have been firebombed while government officials and various Skin Savior-affiliated persons have been assassinated in broad daylight. However, the speciality of Orthus remains home invasions where the targets in question are tortured and mutilated prior to death, likely as a way of discouraging further recruitment to the Skin Saviours.
The Chimera’s Fangs are largely concentrated in space beyond the Orion Confederation, primarily due to the nature of their operations in the Vikara Combine, Hegemony, and other locations. Recovered information suggests that the Chimera’s Fangs are split into multiple divisions based on certain specializations, showing a degree of organization beyond that of a typical terrorist group and bordering on an actual military force. These divisions are: the Hydra Brigades, the Ladon Raiders, the Sphinx Wings, and the Manticores. It is also known that the logistical, noncombat roles of the Chimera’s Fangs lacks an official name, but that they possess plenty of laborers, medical personnel, and other behind-the-scenes roles that allow the organization to function, again, like a military as opposed to a gang or militia.
The Hydra Brigades are the closest the Chimera’s Fangs have to a “standing army.” They are the primary combatants in offensive and defensive roles, with individual brigades often being assigned to guard strongholds in the event they are discovered by the Chimera’s Fangs many, many enemies. By and large, the Hydra Brigades are seen conducting attacks on the many governments and species that the group has decided to stand in opposition to. The Brigades are sub-divided based on their region of operation, though Brigades are known to be rotated out in preparation for certain operations. The Chimera’s Fangs utilize a primitive degree of combined arms warfare to achieve their goals, infantry often being supported by long range artillery and various captured, purchased, and improvised armored vehicles of varying efficiency. The number of these artillery and armored vehicles is suggested to be rather low, given most attacks are conducted by infantry with, at most, barebones technicals as “armored” support. Individual weapons largely vary within individual brigades, with members primarily relying on projectile weapons, with most energy (especially higher end energy) weapons being given to the Ladon Raiders and Manticores, though lower-end energy weapons are not uncommon within the Hydra Brigades. They also possess a number of explosive armaments such as grenade launchers, rocket propelled grenades, and MANPADs, again either stolen, purchased, or made by the Chimera’s Fangs themselves.
The Sphinx Wings are technically part of the Chimera’s Fangs larger logistical network, being concerned with the transportation of personnel across known space. To this effort, they rely on several heavy-tonnage transport freighters, cargo carriers, and repurposed civilian ships. The vast majority of these are, of course, stolen from different factions and modified as needed, if at all. Given that these ships lack dedicated stealth systems, they’re primarily reliant on landing outside the range of a planet’s detection systems, sabotage on the ground, or simple luck. As the name suggested, the Sphinx Wings are divided into different “Wings” that, much like the Hydra Brigades, focus on different parts of space. These Wings are a crucial part of larger operations by the Chimera’s Fangs, being the only method to reliably put artillery, armored vehicles, and large amounts of infantry onto a planet. These ships are often equipped to retreat back out of the atmosphere at the conclusion of an operation, with the Chimera’s Fangs rarely, if ever, dedicating a permanent presence to any location beyond their well-hidden bases. These bases, from various raids, are almost always centered out of asteroids, and the loss of even one base is a massive blow to the group’s supply network as they are heavily reliant on them for the refueling, repairing, and storage of the ships belonging to the Sphinx Wings and Ladon Raiders. However, it’s also been suggested that the Chimera’s Fangs have begun operating out of previously undiscovered or mostly unexplored Frontier worlds, through which they can operate both of their space branches.
The Ladon Raiders are the other dedciated space branch, albeit for a far more offensive purpose. Unlike the Hydra Brigades whose focus is on attacking ground targets, the Ladon Raiders focus solely on attacking targets in space. The majority of these are trade ships belonging to species designated as targets by the Chimera’s Fangs. The typical targets of these are Tyrmalin, namely clans who have been identified as having exiled members exposed as Xenochimera in the past. Other popular targets include Apiaden ships due to second-hand information about hives that were totally sterilized following the discovery of a Xenochimera within their ranks, and most especially Hegemony ships. The Ladon Raiders make a point about their Hegemony targets, however, refusing to assault Zaddat Migrant Fleets and Naramadi ships, instead often targetting either Hegemony military vessels or specifically Unathi ships, again due to intolerances shown towards Xenochimera within Unathi space. OriCon and Vikara Combine vessels are almost never targets of the Ladon Raiders, the former due to them primarily operating beyond OriCon space (and wanting to avoid becoming targets of the JSDF) and the latter for unknown reasons, despite some hostilities towards the Combine. Even so, the Ladon Raiders have been likened to pirates, and their methodology does little to dissuade this: pillaging vessels for fuel, food, water, ammunition, and other useful resources, often executing the crew or leaving them to die. The naval doctrine of the Raiders revovles around the use of fast attack craft to disable the thrusters and weapons of enemy ships, followed by boarding. However, this doctrine is only effective against one or two vessels at most, leading to the Raiders typically focusing on civilian craft belonging to the aforementioned species, or the very rare lone military vessel. This leaves the Raiders as little more than glorified pirates, with even a single failed raid being an incredibly hurtful blow to the organization’s already small naval force.
The smallest branch of the Chimera’s Fangs are the Manticores. While Orthrus is their OriCon-based special forces, the Manticores are the Chimera’s Fangs galactic special forces. The unit composition of the Manticores consists of the most capable individuals within the Chimera’s Fangs, including several of the very few Xenochimera who actually join the organization. These personnel are often ex-military (governmental or corporate) or at the very least above-average in their combat abilities, due to training, experience, augments, genetic modifications, or other circumstances. Fittingly, they have some of the better technology of the organization, the origins of which are still disputed among those outside the Chimera’s Fangs. Several pieces of footage can trace stolen technology back to some of the group’s raids and attacks, while the origins of others are entirely unknown, suggesting they were acquired from an unknown group with ready access to technology from several different factions. Tyrmalin trade ships have been a common attribution for this stolen tech, but certain conspiracy theories suggest that certain Saguar trade ships are willing to barter with the Chimera’s Fangs out of a common disdain for the Hegemony. The veracity of this is still highly debated, with no direct evidence supporting this hypothesis.
It’s not as if the Manticores are likely to tell anytime soon, with members being ready to die rather than be captured by any enemy forces. Of all the organization’s members, they’re easily the most fanatical, something that’s a borderline requirement for joining their ranks. They conduct the most “high risk” operations of the Chimera’s Fangs, ones that can’t be resolved through the raw use of force and require a more delicate hand. Missions are generally focused around the further liberation of Xenochimera, targetting detention centers in the Hegemony and Vikara Combine, the latter especially towards unregistered Xenochimera. These missions typically include infiltrating deep into enemy territory, followed by a quick extraction. Generally, they target high-security locations, as lower-to-medium security facilities can often be taken out by a Hydra assault. Further Manticore missions include assassinations, sabotage, espionage, and so on, with a moderate rate of success depending on the type of mission and outside factors. Though the Manticores are far from an elite intelligence agency, the particular skillsets of some of their members, the Xenochimera with them especially, mean they are capable of pulling off their specialized goals of weakning their enemies, sowing terror among their ranks, and furthering the liberation of Xenochimera across known space.
Ever since its inception, the Chimera’s Fangs have really only seen moderate success in their goals…if one only thinks of their military actions as such. In truth, their actions have only made them out as a terrorist organization fixated on retributive violence towards anyone who is even mildly perceived as having slighted Xenochimera, justifiable or not. Their only slight positive impact, the culling of Skin Saviours in OriCon space, is still brought down by their violent methods and their unflinching spite towards the rest of space at large, save for the few species who treat Xenochimera with a modicum of respect. Even so, the example of, say, the Zaddat and Naramadi getting ignored by the Chimera’s Fangs has not stopped them from condemning the organization, along with much of space. While several of their raids and attacks have resulted in success, the organization has yet to see any groundbreaking military victory. It’s unlikely the organization’s goals will ever be realized, and now the galactic powers just wait for it to fizzle out and die to reduce the amount of misery their actions bring to known space.
Roanoke Research Institute
The Roanoke Research Institute is a privately-funded medical research organization founded in 2566. As the name suggests, the Institute focuses on a greater understanding of how Roanoke cells (and, by extension, Xenochimera) operate and interact with other Roanoke cells and external stimulii. While this is largely a scientific endeavor, the RRI is primarily focused around the application of Roanoke cells beyond their existence within ROAs (Roanoke Organic Apparatus).
The RRI was founded by, and gains the majority of its funding from, Kynde Group Pharmaceuticals, which some will formerly know as Waffle Co. Formerly a member of the Syndicate, Waffle Co was left on the verge of bankruptcy following the end of the Phoron Wars, something only slightly improved by Donk Co buying out their food production capabilities. The loss of those saw them rebrand as a pharmaceutical company, albeit to moderate success. Kynde’s main rivals are the medicinal giants Vey-Med and Zeng-Hu Pharmaceuticals, which they’ve rather unsuccessfully competed against. Most of Kynde’s business comes from corporations who, for one reason or another, are refused access to Zeng-Hu’s medicine, allowing Kynde to carve itself a small, but noticeable niche in explored space, albeit only a former shadow of Waffle Co’s former “glory.”
It’s obvious, then, to many outsiders that the RRI is Kynde’s attempt at opening and monopolizing a new market: Roanoke-based medicine. The RRI proudly touts that finding ways to use Roanoke cells for medicinal purposes can greatly cheapen the cost of cloning, regrowing limbs, gene therapy, and other areas of medical science that have yet to be considered. Most research, at the current time, is focused around understanding Roanoke and its relationship to Xenochimera rather than its actual medical application. Given the nature of Roanoke, testing on sapient species has yet to progress very far, and even animal testing has been much of a dead end beyond gathering data as to how Roanoke interacts with other types of cells and living organisms. While RRI has made some discoveries about Roanoke, they are arguably just as far from utilizing it in medicine as they were when first founded.
Nevertheless, the RRI has received a decent amount of attention from Xenochimera themselves, with a small number allowing themselves to be part of the RRI’s research for a variety of reasons. The most common is the hope that Roanoke-based medicine and treatments will lead to a greater acceptance of Xenochimera in known space. Others are drawn in by the promised compensation by the RRI, typically those who have been relocated by the Lucchini Foundation. The Foundation and RRI have a rather close relationship, with the RRI’s parent company, Kynde, publicly donating to the Lucchini Foundation, be it in cash, medicine, or other resources. In return, the Foundation often presents the RRI as being a way for relocated Xenochimera to have a line of work and to benefit their species by engaging in research that should lead to a greater acceptance of them.
As is to be expected for a corporation once associated with the Syndicate, Kynde is far from a benevolent entity. The RRI is partially a front organization for Kynde’s real brainchild: the Roanoke Initiative. The Initiative is a heavily secretive project started by Kynde around the same time the RRI was publicly formed, with the goal of successfully weaponizing Xenochimera. Compared to the RRI’s public research, the Initiative’s methods are unethical and downright inhumane. The Initiative relies on testing sapient species from across space, ranging from OriCon, Hegemony, Vikara Combine, Adhomai, and others to leave no stone unturned in their “research.”
While the Initiative utilizes samples gathered from willing Xenochimera who work with the RRI, they also rely on whole Xenochimera for other purposes. Where they acquire these Xenochimera ties into Kynde’s relation with the Lucchini Foundation, with Kynde agents (perhaps reliving their old Syndicate days) infiltrating the Lucchini Foundation and finding relocated Xenochimera to be kidnapped by the RRI and moved to their facilities. These kidnappings are often mocked up to be the result of various anti-Xenochimera groups, although some would argue that such a fate is preferable to the kidnapped ROAs. Non-ROA test subjects are often disposed of by being fed to so-called “mimics” in the hopes of a rare metamorphosis that will turn said mimic into a new Xenochimera for further experimentation. Mimics are also, of course, the subject of testing for attempted domestication. Hunts to gather new mimics are typically carried out by mercenaries hired by Kynde, paid much like poachers would for the live capture of these Roanoke-based organisms.
While most Xenochimera are used to harvest their Roanoke cells for experimentation, plenty are used in an attempt to apply a technology passed down from Kynde’s days as Waffle Co: its mind-control technology. Much of the research into Kynde’s captured ROA subjects revolves around attempts at successfully brainwashing or otherwise mentally dominating them through varying techniques and methods. The Initiative has even considered attempting to utilize morphogenetics in an attempt to mentally control Xenochimera, though this field of research remains woefully unexplored even compared to their current knowledge. Nevertheless, if Kynde ever does figure out how to successfully utilize Roanoke cells, if not whole Xenochimera themselves, then the stories of “Changelings” oft heard during the Phoron Wars may yet see a revival.
