SoP: General

General Expectations

A company is defined by its people, and products. Those onboard the installation represent Nanotrasen as a corporation.

The Employed Staff are expected to accomplish the installation’s specific directives - whether it may be to scout the local sector, operate a planetary outpost, or to gather resources and artifacts for further operations.

  • Accomplish the installation’s directives.
  • Treat your coworkers with respect.
  • Act with responsibility towards your work.
  • Work together with departmental staff, and coordinate with your department head.
  • Look out for one another - the Frontier is a dangerous place.

Remember - You represent the Company, its diversity, and its integrity. Great rewards await those who perform above and beyond in the line of duty!

Operational Autonomy

Or, 'a sergeant at the front outranks a general in the rear'.

Read this clause very carefully before attempting to justify a defense based on it. This is very specific, and is not the 'disagreement clause'.

Nanotrasen Science / Exploration vessels run into a myriad of situations that are hard or counterproductive to legislate around. Even the on-board heads of staff may not know what is best in a given situation when they are not there to see it. As such crewmembers are implicitly granted operational autonomy - in specific cases - to perform their duties to the best of their abilities, even if their judgement call is counter to a command order.

  • Some examples of where this is relevant:
    • An engineer refusing to turn on a system they deem as extremely hazardous to the health of the crew, despite the CE telling them to.
    • A security officer or explorer refusing to engage in immediate hostilities when a better outcome for may be reached with different methodologies - and their refusal to do so despite orders does not endanger others.
    • A scientist refusing the RD's orders to do something that would endanger the ship as a whole.
    • A doctor treating a crewmember with a different method than the CMO's directives to ensure a better outcome for said crewmember.
  • This clause will not automatically protect you from prosecution should you choose to disobey command orders.
    • Heads of staff are expected to review whether a deviation from orders is valid. Anyone trusted to be a department head should understand that at times, their underlings may remedy a particular problem better than they can.
    • If still deemed invalid, it is left to the usual Command staff to determine fault - this usually involves the Captain where one is available.
  • Always ascertain intent. this clause is not here to protect those choosing to disobey orders because they do not agree with them, rather than those who disobey orders because those orders were given with imperfect information or compromised judgement.
    • Remember: Your head of staff may have good reason to ask for something that is seemingly a bad idea.

Dress Code

All crew members and visitors are to wear, at the minimum:

  • A shirt that covers the chest
  • Pants, shorts, or skirts that go no shorter than two inches above the knee
  • Some form of foot covering

Departmental staff should refer to their department protocols for required apparel. In general, departmental staff should opt to be identifiable.

Exceptions

  • Those engaging in certain recreational activites (e.g. visiting the Pool, Sauna, similar) have less strict dress codes.
  • Off-Duty personnel and visitors have less strict dress codes. They must still abide by regulations regarding indecent exposure.

Gear Harnesses / Nudity Permits

Those unable to wear standard clothing, or species whose genitalia are otherwise hidden by animalistic features are permitted to use gear harnesses / wear ‘nudity permits’ instead of adhering to the usual dress code.

  • This applies only to the cases above. Claiming to be a ‘nudist’ otherwise is not permitted, and attempting to use a harness / nudity permit in that way will net you an Indecent Exposure charge.
  • For biologicals, the species in question must be recognized to be omitting genitalia under standard circumstances.
  • For synthetics / prosthetic users, the model in question must be clearly robotic. Using Vey-Med and similar brands that closely mimic a biological’s body disqualifies you from this clause.
  • Even if this clause applies to you, you are expected to wear clothing if it is not physically inhibiting for you to do so. Professionalism is important.
  • The person in question must actually not have visible genitalia for this to apply. Genemods and less standard prosthetics are unfortunately common, and thus exceptions must be made in both directions.

Employee Rights

As part of the Corporate Labor Charter, all employees are granted the following rights:

  • Employees have the right to equal pay for equal work, without discrimination.
    • You cannot be denied equal compensation because of your appearance, gender, genetics, or personal beliefs.
  • Employees have the right to adequate compensation and social protection in return for services offered.
    • The Company shall provide a wage in the Orion Confederacy’s standard currency of Thalers, and shall provide basic housing for all employees upon request.
  • Employees have the right to rest and leisure, as well as reasonable working hours.
    • You cannot be fired for not doing your job 24/7. Off-Duty shifts are there for your usage, and vacations are permitted.
  • Employees have the right to a non-hostile workplace.
    • Harassment cases should be sent to the nearest IAA agent; requesting one via fax is permitted if one does not exist.
  • Employees may not be coerced or threatened to provide functions outside of their listed duties.
    • If you are employed for a specific function or set of responsibilities, you cannot be conscripted or otherwise forced to do something you are unable to do, barring emergencies for which you are qualified to resolve.

Going Off-Duty

Timeclock terminals allow going off-duty while onboard the installation.

  • If you plan to take an extended period of time to yourself, you are required to use these terminals to declare yourself as off-duty. The cutoff is commonly 20 or so minutes.
  • It is not permissable to punish an employee for clocking out, unless they do so maliciously (e.g. clocking out whne called for an emergency, and not before).

Employment Records

All Nanotrasen crew are advised to fill out their records forms with HR.

  • All Command positions require coherent and up-to-date records.
  • Employee records are strictly for official usage. Misuse of employee records may be grounds for disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Privacy Policy

Under normal station operations, private areas have an expectation of reasonable privacy that may not be invaded without a justifiable warrant.

Examples include:

  • Dormitories
  • Bathrooms
  • Personal offices
  • Personal lockers

These expectations are able to be suspended during emergencies. See Emergency Protocols for more details.

Violations of Privacy Policy, or abuse of alert levels as an excuse to violate privacy without justifiable need must be reported to Central Command with due haste.

Hazardous Operations

Nanotrasen provides free-of-charge treatment and therapies dedicated to ensuring a positive outcome for employees harmed in the line of duty. Installations are often fitted with expensive, state of the art medical and research facilities to treat any possible injury or affliction sustained in service to the company.

  • Most contraband regulations are ignored by the ISD for areas external to the installation. Contraband regulations are there to provide a safe working environment, but given the relative danger of external areas, crewmembers are allowed to carry armaments to defend themselves if they see fit to do so.
    • Contraband regulations may still be enforced if there is reason to believe a crewmember is a threat to the safety of others.

Willful Peril

Crewmembers are expected to safeguard their life and ensure their own physical, and mental wellbeing. Resources are not guaranteed for those willfully endangering them in a way contradictory to their assigned post and directives.

Entering a hazardous zone or leaving the installation against directives or orders comes with these automatic provisions:

  • When there are insufficient resources, Security and Medical staff are waived from obligation to render aid, up to and including corpse recovery in the event of your demise.
    • Recovery may be extremely dangerous for the personnel involved. Medical staff are not required to put their lives on the line to save yours if you willfully ignore orders.
  • Many extraneous areas lack communications relays for vitals tracking or distress signals. Usual expectations of timely recovery are void.
  • These only apply for either clearly marked areas, or in cases where one explicitly disobey orders to avoid a certain location, as well as for those willfully deserting the installation. The latter two cases are punishable in of themselves.

Courtesy Procedures

Sanctioned Visitors

Visitors arriving from employee transports or being restored from cryosleep fall under this category.

These visitors are sanctioned by the Company, and have undergone basic pre-screening. They automatically have permission to stay on the premises.

  • Arriving visitors are allowed free access to all public areas, unless explicitly barred by command staff or an employee in charge of said area in the cases of entertainment regions like the Bar.
  • Arriving visitors otherwise have the same rights as Employees, even if they lack the same responsibilities as Employees.
  • Arriving visitors are subject to the same regulations as Employees, and may be ordered to vacate a specific area or otherwise comply with non-interference during an incident.

External Visitors

Visitors arriving on the installation from a shuttlecraft, pod, or brought back by the crew without prior permit fall under this category.

Traders, members of other corporations, natives, aliens, colonists, etc, also fall under this category.

These visitors are not pre-authorized by the Company. More information on how to handle these situations are in Chain of Command and Security Protocol.

  • External visitors may be screened for dangerous weaponry, biohazards, and similar by the Security and Medical departments.
  • External visitors may be required to stay within a specific area, if reasonable (e.g. asking them to stay within the civillian areas instead of snooping around maintenance).
  • External visitors may be expelled from the facility by the authority of Command, or if Command is missing, Security.
    • If there is no safe way to do this (e.g. they did not come on their own craft), determine what to do from here. If they are a threat to the crew, there is often sufficient reason for Security to detain them.
  • External visitors must request permission to board. Permission to board is considered a privilege, not a right.

External Officials

Diplomats, representatives, and ranking members of any corporation, colony, or group fall under this category.

  • Command is expected to handle any official business. See Chain of Command for details.
  • Officials do not have authority over the installation. However, they should generally be allowed free roam of public areas.
  • Officials may be treated as external visitors otherwise.
