The Belt Colonial Union
History:
The Belt Colonial Union (BCU) is a Democratic-Socialist polity which inhabits the majority of moons, asteroids, and planetoids located throughout the Sol system and some beyond. Compared to the other governments of Sol - Namely Earth, Mars, and Luna - The BCU is younger to the political stage of The Orion Confederation.
Despite only a couple to a few centuries-worth of history, the BCU has grown to become a major power broker within the Confederation, particularly regarding trade, economy, and industry. The history of the BCU can be dated back to the unionization of the disparate workers of places like Europe, Ganymede, Calisto, and Ceres, along with Pluto and Eris, though both of these would partially secede from the Union in time.
These workers banded together originally to lobby and protest working conditions set in place by the rapidly growing governments of the Sol System. These worker’s unions soon sparked a revolution that brought the people of the Belts under a single government that represented the men and women who worked in those dangerous conditions. The Belt Colonial Union was born.
Modern Day:
Despite their name, the BCU is not particularly communist or Marxist but does however support many socialist policies for their people such as Free Healthcare, Social Security, and other Community services that differ between the various planetoids under their governance.
Most colonies of the Belt are more akin to large orbital facilities and installations tacked onto rocks, given gravity by either artificial generators or through centrifugal forces. These installations tend to have industries focused around station & ship construction, mining, research, or other engineering endeavors. In addition to this, the largest installations of the Belt are also key trading nodes in the Sol System, namely Titan, Ceres, Triton, and Europa.
